Family & Youth

Safeway encourages family and youth activities through our work with hundreds of organizations each year. Since the inception of our Because We Care program in 1998, we have committed more than $1.8 million to improving the lives of families and children. Our attention is focused on supporting children in crisis situations, encouraging learning and providing fun opportunities that promote family time.

Kids Help Phone

Kids Help Phone is Canada’s only national, 24-hour, bilingual information, counselling and referral service that offers a lifeline for more than 300,000 calls a year. This organization plays the important role of “being there for kids” - helping assure them that no matter what issue they have or what time of day it is, they are not alone. Safeway's support of Kids Help Phone includes distribution of their kid-focused magazine, Not For Adults.

Parent Help Line

An extension of Kids Help Phone, Parent Help Line is a separate 24-hour, bilingual information, counselling and referral service available to parents who need support on any issue. Safeway recognizes the struggles some parents face with their children and are an enthusiastic supporter of this excellent service.

Canadian 4-H Council

4-H promotes and encourages the growth and potential of Canada’s greatest resource - its youth! For more than 80 years, 4-H has encouraged Canada’s rural young people to participate in conservation, livestock, drama, computers, crafts and many other projects as they "Learn To Do By Doing". Safeway has been a proud supporter of national and regional 4-H projects for more than a decade.

School Program

Safeway and our employees are proud to play a significant and vital role in the promotion and support of the youth in our community. Through programs like Partners in Education, many of our stores have linked up with local schools to provide students with behind-the-scenes work experience, opportunities to display their art and other accomplishments, and provide financial support for school activities and programs.

Operation Christmas Child
"The Shoe Box Program"

Kids helping kids around the world! Millions of children worldwide have been touched by The Shoe Box Program. The gift of a simple shoe box provides hope to needy children in desperate situations. Safeway has collected more than 340,000 gift-filled shoe boxes in the past six years from customers, schools and local churches. The shoe boxes are then given to children throughout the world who might never have received a gift. They can then experience the hope demonstrated through the love of a stranger sending them a precious gift from another part of the world.

Safeway is an active supporter of more than 100 major festivals and fairs throughout Western Canada. Look for Safeway-sponsored involvement at children's festivals, arts and entertainment events, rodeos and exhibitions.
