Since the inception of our Because We Care program in 1998, our company has helped raise more than $3.1 million for important health issues.

We believe in the importance of a healthy community. Under our Because We Care banner, our support has been guided to address the issues of diabetes, cancer, heart and stroke, as well as Easter Seals, the United Way and many wonderful foundations, hospitals and causes.

Cancer Society
(National & Provincial Divisions)

Cancer is a disease that touches the lives of so many people we know and love. Through our special fundraising programs and volunteer payroll deductions that are part of the Because We Care program, we have raised more than $750,000 for the ongoing battle against cancer.

Heart & Stroke Foundation
(National & Provincial Divisions)

This organization is dedicated to furthering the study, prevention and reduction of heart disease and stroke through cardiovascular research and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Heart disease and stroke claims one Canadian life every 7 minutes. Through the Because We Care program, we have been able to contribute more than $650,000 to this important organization.

Juvenile Diabetes
(National & Provincial Divisions)

Prostate cancer is the number one cancer threat to the lives and health of men. One in eight Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime and as many as 20,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year alone. The Prostate Cancer Research Foundation is the leading, privately funded organization devoted solely to research into the cause, care and prevention of prostate cancer. Through Safeway’s annual campaign, we are focused on educating the public on this important issue and raising funds for the Foundation for future prostate cancer research.
