Because We Care Program
It takes an extraordinary group of people to raise $7.5 million for charity, but that's just what our employees have done. Since 1998, Canada Safeway stores have been selecting an annual community cause to support as part of our Because We Care program. Working in partnership with the chosen organization, our employees endeavor to raise a shopping cart full of cash through various creative and tried and true fundraising activities. Safeway is proud of its employees, and together with the support of our customers, we are making a difference throughout the community.
The Because We Care Program has helped schools, women's shelters, seniors' centres, nature sites and animal services. We've helped a 17-year-old child speak for the very first time. We've helped a grandmother hear her grandson laugh for the first time. We've invested money into disease research and helped provide a place for troubled teens. We're making an impact - we believe we are making the world a better place.
Throughout the year, our stores sell raffle tickets, hold round-up days, and organize carnivals and bake sales so that we can raise money and build awareness for community organizations. And while some of our stores raise between $20,000 and $30,000 each year, the success of the fundraising effort is helped directly by the active involvement of the benefitting organization.
If you would like to suggest an organization that may benefit from this program, contact your neighbourhood Safeway Store Manager. Criteria for selection include community need, a base of volunteer support, and enthusiasm, along with information on the primary focus of the organization. Our employees review all suggestions in the early part of each year and then together vote and rally behind their cause for the next 6 months.
