Project Location
Prowers County and Baca County, Colorado
Commercial On-line Date (COD)
March 2004
Total Capacity
7.5 Megawatts
Annual Energy Production
Over 23,000 Megawatt Hours
Project Site:
Four of the five turbines are located approximately 4 miles southwest of Lamar, Colorado, and the fifth near Springfield, Colorado.
Joint project between Lamar Light and Power and the Arkansas River Power Authority (ARPA). Locations were selected for favorable conditions such as proximity to existing power lines and land use.
The average wind speed is estimated to be 7.96 meters per second (mps).
Project provides an economic boost for the city of Lamar.
Turbines:
Each of the five turbines has a 1.5 MW capacity, 7.5 MW capacity total.
The turbines are approximately 260 feet tall with blades that are approximately 111 feet long.
The three blades are designed to operate between 11 and 22 revolutions per minute. Each blade has its own indepdendent adjustment mechanism that allows it to change the pitch of the blade depending on wind speed.
Output:
The Lamar wind turbines produce enough energy to supply 14% of Lamar Light and Power's energy needs.
